Wyke Farms Ltd is a family run company based in the heart of the Somerset cheddar-making region. The art of traditional cheese making will never be lost on the Somerset farm where the Clothier family have been making cheddar in Somerset since 1861.Today, Wyke Farms is one of the largest independent cheese makers and milk processors in the UK producing over 13000 tonnes of cheddar per year to the same award winning 150-year-old recipe.
Bruton, Somerset, 27th February 2017 – Wyke Farms, the UK’s largest independent cheese producers and producers of renewable energy, have been recognized for their work in sustainability with a win at this years ‘Green Innovation and Finance Awards’. The award came as Rich Clothier, 3rd generation family member and Managing Director at Wyke Farms, was announced as ‘Business Leader of the Year’.
Rich’s passion for sustainability resonated with the judges, who awarded his great ambition for Wyke Farms, and for rewriting the farming narrative. Rich was recognised for his passion for ‘practical environmentalism’ in addressing carbon emissions and water usage in farming and in helping to make their long-standing family business more environmentally sustainable and also financially sustainable at the same time. Rich stood out in this category as a keen advocate for sustainable farming, speaking at many conferences around the country in order to encourage others. The judges also highly commend Juliet Davenport at Good Energy as an ‘icon in the space’.
Richard would like to see the government providing more financial help to members of the public, communities and farmers who wish to use their natural assets, such as South facing roofs for solar or organic waste for anaerobic digestion, in order to help the environment.
Previously known as the ‘New Energy and Clean Tech Awards,’ the newly named Green Innovation and Finance Awards have been leading the way in recognising critical achievements and developments in the clean energy sector, and rewarding those committed to the growth of the green economy
