Devon Dairy Student Awarded Wyke Farms ‘West Country Dairy Award’ 2014

Wyke Scholarship Fund supporting students in the Dairy Industry

Somerset, UK – 4th November 2013 – Wyke Farms, the UK’s largest independent cheese producer and milk processor, is delighted to announce that Will Slade, from Chawleigh, Devon, is this year’s Wyke Farms winner in the West Country Dairy Awards. Wyke Farms presented Will with a scholarship of £1,000 towards his studies in Veterinary Medicine.

Will is currently studying for a degree in Veterinary Medicine at the University of Cambridge. He has always been actively involved in his family’s dairy farm, where about 200 organic Dairy Shorthorns are kept. Based in Chawleigh, near Chulmleigh in Devon, Will is passionate about dairy farming.

Will was delighted to win the £1,000 prize money, saying “As my vacation periods will now be spent undertaking vital work experience as a vet student, instead of working on the family farm, this funding will help support me with my day-to-day living costs at university. Through my studies I will gain an improved understanding of how to treat animals as well as knowledge of diseases which could pose a threat to my livestock, all of which I can put into practice back in the field.”

“We are proud to be supporting the future of dairy farming and to be able to help students, such as Will, through their studies” said Rich Clothier, managing director and 3rd generation family member at Wyke Farms “Will came across as very self-motivated and passionate about dairy farming with a strong level of business awareness and determination – a rare combination to find in a 21 year-old today.”

Wyke Farms has been producing its award-winning cheddar for over a century and has grown to become the largest family-owned cheese maker in Britain selling over 14,000 tonnes annually.

Wyke Farms have 150 years of family farming experience. Wyke Farms’ cheese and butter is made with the milk from their cows grazing the lush pastures of the Mendip Hills in the centre of the Cheddar making region in Somerset.

The Wyke Farms products are available nationwide and can be found in Asda, Co-op, Makro, Sainsbury’s Tesco and Waitrose.
