We Need You! Help support local business Wyke Farms To Win BBC Food & Farming Award

Show your support for Bruton-based Wyke Farms and help put Somerset on the map

Somerset, UK – 17th January 2013 – Bruton-based Wyke Farms, the UK’s largest independent cheese producer and milk processor, is in the running to win a BBC Radio 4’s Food and Farming Award and is looking for your support to win the Best Food Producer and the Best Initiative in British Food awards.

The 14th BBC Food and Farming Awards celebrate the best of British food and aim to honour those who have done most to promote the cause of good food. This is your chance to help support a local business and put Somerset on the map!

The Best Food Producer award goes to the business, which uses quality ingredients to create an excellent product. Wyke Farms’ cheese and butter is made with the milk from their cows grazing the lush pastures of the Mendip Hills in the centre of the Cheddar making region in Somerset, to their 150-year-old family recipe.  The quality of Wyke Farms’ cheddar has been heralded as world-class and in 2013 alone, Wyke received over 140 awards and accolades for its cheddar.

The Best Initiative in British Food is awarded to the company that is making a positive difference to how and what Britain eats – including having a positive impact on farmers as well working towards sustainable food sourcing. In 2013, Wyke Farms became the UK’s first national cheddar brand to be 100% self-sufficient in green energy.  At the centre of the company’s green energy strategy is its anaerobic digester (AD) plant that processes farm and dairy waste to produce energy, saving over 4 million kilos of carbon dioxide per annum. As part of their long-term sustainability project, Wyke has already invested in several other measures to ensure it is 100% sustainable, including solar arrays across its farm buildings, electric delivery vehicles, reduced packaging and re-using waste water in its dairy.  Also, as farmers themselves, the Clothier family work hard to add value to their range of products to ensure that a sustainable price is paid to their milk suppliers.

To vote for Wyke Farms go to the BBC website (http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b03nycpj/features/awards-categories) click on Best Food Producer and Best Initiative in British Food and simply fill in the online form saying why you think Wyke Farms should win. Wyke Farms has been producing its award-winning cheddar for over a century and has grown to become the largest family-owned cheese maker in Britain selling over 14,000 tonnes annually. The company have achieved substantial growth year on year by staying true to the traditional values behind the brand and have become the fastest growing cheddar brand at a rate of 10% every year for the past five years.
