Somerset Dairy Student Awarded Wyke Farms ‘West Country Dairy Award’ 2013

Wyke Scholarship Fund supporting students in the Dairy Industry

Somerset, UK – 15th October 2013 – Wyke Farms, the UK’s largest independent cheese producer and milk processor, is delighted to announce that Henry Lucas, from Ilminster, Somerset, is this year’s Wyke Farms winner in the West Country Dairy Awards. Wyke Farms presented Henry with a scholarship of £1,000 towards his studies in dairy farming.

Henry is currently studying for a degree in Agriculture at Hamper Adams University. He has always been actively involved in his family’s dairy farm in Puckington, near Ilminster in Somerset, and is passionate about dairy farming,

Henry was delighted to win the £1,000 prize money, saying “This funding will help me with day-to-day living costs at university and also go towards expensive competency tests which are critical in securing a placement at a progressive dairy. The skills which I’ll learn on placement will enable me to create the best dairy herd when I return home.”

 Rich Clothier, managing director and 3rd generation family member at Wyke Farms said “We are proud to be supporting the future of dairy farming and to be able to help students, such as Henry, through their studies. Henry has a real enthusiasm and passion for dairy farming that was immediately evident.”

Wyke Farms has been producing its award-winning cheddar for over a century and has grown to become the largest family-owned cheese maker in Britain selling over 14,000 tonnes annually. The company have achieved substantial growth year on year by staying true to the traditional values behind the brand and have become the fastest growing cheddar brand at a rate of 10% every year for the past five years.

Wyke Farms have 150 years of family farming experience. Wyke Farms’ cheese and butter is made with the milk from their cows grazing the lush pastures of the Mendip Hills in the centre of the Cheddar making region in Somerset.

The Wyke Farms products are available nationwide and can be found in Asda, Co-op, Makro, Sainsbury’s Tesco and Waitrose.
