(UK) UK’s Fastest Growing Cheddar Brand Wyke Farms Reaches £1million per week in Retail Sales

Family owned and operated cheddar brand surpasses competitors according to new data

Somerset UK – May 5, 2009 – Wyke Farms, the UK’s largest independent cheese producer and milk processor, today revealed the latest brand performance figures from TNS, confirming Wyke Farms as the fastest growing brand within the Cheddar category. With record sales over the past year, Wyke Farms has officially crossed the £1 million per week threshold in retail sales for the first time ever – a momentous achievement for the century-old, family-run company.

The brand performance data from TNS is generated from a panel of 25,000 households, making it the largest panel in the UK. According to their most recent report, which monitored 52 weeks ending March 22, 2009, Wyke Farms’ brand sales came in at £52,175,000, representing a remarkable 180 percent growth over the past year. In the last three months alone, Wyke’s brand sales surpassed those of Mclelland Seriously Strong, the company’s nearest competitor, putting them close on the heels of Pilgrims Choice.

“Over the past year, Wyke Farms has taken significant steps to better serve consumers’ needs by modernizing our approach – including the launch of a new grated line, redesigned labels and re-sealable packaging – while maintaining the tradition that has shaped our brand over the past 100 years,” said Richard Clothier, third generation family member & Managing Director, Wyke Farms. “The latest results from TNS not only serve to support our recent efforts, but more importantly, they reaffirm consumer demand for the core brand values we continue to be so passionate about.”

Wyke Farms is based in the heart of the cheddar-making region in Somerset, and is the only independent dairy company within the top 10 cheddar brands in the UK. Owned and operated by the Clothier family, the company has been making cheddar to Ivy Clothier’s original recipe since 1902 and has achieved substantial growth year-on-year by staying true to the traditional values behind the brand. Today Wyke has grown to become the largest family-owned cheese maker in Britain selling over 14,000 tonnes annually, reflecting an increasing consumer interest in provenance.

Wyke Farms cheese and butter products are available nationwide and can be found in Asda, Co-Op, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s and Tesco.
